Zweyerley Pfeifferey
The Duo Zweyerley Pfeifferey is engaged with preference for medieval music
from Spain, Scotland, Hungary, France, Norway, Sweden and Germany, music of the renaissance area (like Dandrieu, Schein, Scheidt), but also popular songs from musicals etc., now and then with jazz-inspirated improvisations.
Maria Scharwieß is playing four different kinds of bagpipes: Irish tin whistle, Gemshorn and organ. Heidi Frielinghaus is playing Gemshorn, bass- and sopranino recorder and violin.
The instruments
Gaita
A spanish bagpipe with strong and powerful sound – it is the typical instrument of minstrels in Galicia and usable for a geat variety of musical performances. Even nowadays
you can hear its sound in markets, before churches and on all kinds of festivals.
Hümmelchen
The smallest german bagpipe with a low, charming tender and nasal sound.
Schäferpfeife
A german renaissance bagpipe, which ceased to exist with the beginning of 18th century and was newly discovered in the 20th century, rebuilt according to drawings of Michael Prätorius.
Great Highland Bagpipe
This "youngest" bagpipe from the the 18th century in Scotland with its loud und really powerful sound was originally considered to perform military music. Since 20th century this bagpipe made its way into the concert-halls.
The Gemshorn – an instrument for dancing music in the renaissance age, again discovered in the 20th century. Today it is made from a cowhorn and furnished with an embouchure.
The Recorders belong to the oldest musical instruments, inciting master builders of all times to recreat newly formed groups of instruments. Since Renaissance recorders have been popular as chambermusic- and solo-instruments.
